Low Ceiling – BKN/OVC cloud base below your ceiling threshold.
Hard weather codes – RA (rain), SN (snow), TS (thunderstorms), FG (fog). SN and icing-family codes are ignored by default for sim realism unless you re-enable them in settings.
Soft weather codes – BR (mist), HZ (haze). Lighter indicators; if visibility and winds are otherwise good, they may not trigger a hard warning.
Arrival Match – A 0–100% composite score representing how closely your estimated arrival overlaps with the forecast weather window. It combines three factors: time-in-window (how centrally your ETA falls inside the adverse TAF window), severity (hard reasons like fog/thunder carry more weight), and ETA horizon (forecasts closer to now are more certain). Hover the Arr Window for per-window details.
ETA Position Bar – The colored bar under Arr Window shows where your ETA falls within the bad weather period. Red center = highest chance of encountering bad weather; yellow edges = you may arrive before/after the worst conditions.
⛰️ Challenging Approach – Airport known for difficult terrain, short runways, or demanding procedures (e.g., Lukla, Paro, Queenstown).

How BadWx Works

What it does

BadWx finds simulator routes with challenging weather near the time you are expected to arrive. It checks current METAR reports and TAF forecasts for monitored airports.

Find a route

Choose an aircraft.
Filter by region, flight time, or weather.
Compare the Severity and Arrival Match.
Open the weather details.
Send the route to SimBrief when ready.

Severity

Severity rates the relative challenge from 1 to 10. It considers visibility, ceiling, wind, gusts, storms, and precipitation.

Arrival Match

Arrival Match shows how closely your estimated arrival lines up with the forecast weather window. It is a guide, not a probability or guarantee.

Estimated time

The estimate uses the selected aircraft profile and includes the current preflight allowance. Actual flight time will vary.

When no routes appear

Conditions may be calm, or the current settings may be too strict. Try another region or check again later.

Limits

Weather can change after the page updates. Longer routes have less reliable arrival forecasts. The simulator may not reproduce reported conditions exactly.

Weather Thresholds

These define what counts as "bad weather" — routes are shown when conditions meet or exceed these limits.

Any single threshold exceeded = bad weather (OR logic, not AND)

Visibility Threshold (SM)

Range: 0–10 SM

Wind Speed Threshold (kt)

Range: 0–100 kt

Gust Speed Threshold (kt)

Range: 0–150 kt

Ceiling Threshold (ft)

Range: 0–5,000 ft
